When you sell a vehicle, boat, trailer, or other titled property privately in Michigan, a completed bill of sale records the price, date, and the legal names of both parties. That is the documentation Michigan Department of State relies on to process the title transfer. Michigan also requires an odometer disclosure for vehicle and motorcycle sales, which is built into every document.
Michigan does not require notarization, though either party can choose to notarize for added protection. After the sale, the buyer should complete the title transfer with Michigan Department of State within 15 days of the sale. Keep your copy of the completed bill of sale as proof of the transaction.
Michigan-specific notes: Michigan does not require a bill of sale for title transfer but strongly recommends one. Title is transferred by seller assignment on the back of the title. An Odometer Mileage Statement (Form BDVR-108) is needed only if the title has no space for the odometer reading.

Federal law requires an odometer disclosure for model year 2011 and newer vehicles until they are 20 model years old; model year 2010 and older vehicles are exempt.
No title from the seller? A bill of sale alone usually isn't enough to title a vehicle in Michigan. First ask the seller to request a duplicate title from their state. If that isn't possible, many states offer a bonded title, and the application usually asks for a signed bill of sale as proof you bought the vehicle.
